A tourist is facing charges following a crash that killed an unborn child in Whangarei at the weekend.

A 27-year-old French woman was driving a car that collided head-on with another vehicle on Whangarei Heads Road on Sunday night.

An 18-year-old pregnant woman travelling in the second car lost her baby after the crash, and is now in a serious condition in Whangarei hospital.

The driver and another passenger, a 14-year-old boy, were also injured.

Police have charged the French tourist with careless driving causing injury.

She was due to appear in the Counties Manukau District Court on Thursday.
