Complaint after porn video goes viral

Two Blenheim woman have complained to police after a pornographic video they made of themselves with another woman went viral on the internet.

The video of the women, believed to be in their late teens and early 20s, was spotted on social media last week.

A police spokesperson says it appears the women made the video themselves to sell overseas, but it has inadvertently been put online.

Although two of the women have complained, police say at this stage no criminal offence has been committed.

However, police are monitoring people's behaviour online to try to establish whether an offence had been committed, such as harassment, intimidation or cyber bullying.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says the video going viral proves the need for a new cyber-bullying law.

The Harmful Digital Communications Bill, which is currently before a parliamentary select committee, would make it a crime to send messages or post material online with the intent to cause harm.

Ms Collins says that would potentially apply in the Blenheim case.

"That's one of the reasons we need the bill to come through so that we do actually have an approved agency who has the ability to get the ISP providers and the providers of social media services to get it down.

"But it is also, unfortunately, a real warning to anybody - don't undertake that activity on camera."
