Worries about Filipino workers in NZ

3:59 pm on 18 February 2014

An advocate for Filipino workers in New Zealand is concerned those applying to participate in this country's working holiday scheme could be misled.

The working holiday scheme was expanded on 5 February to include the Philippines, allowing 100 people from there to work, study, or holiday in New Zealand for a year.

Dennis Maga, national co-ordinator for the advocacy group, Migrante Aotearoa, fears recruiting agencies will mislead Filipinos into believing a working holiday visa will guarantee permanent employment in New Zealand.

Mr Maga says Filipinos should look at other schemes that might offer better permanent job options in New Zealand than the working holiday scheme.
