Cocaine 'not destined for NZ'

Cocaine found in a shipping container in Christchurch wasn't destined for New Zealand, police investigating the discovery say.

The package of cocaine was found in February in a container at a depot in Woolston owned by the Lyttelton Port Company.

Detective Inspector Virginia Le Bas said inquiries revealed that the container was travelling from South America to Europe.

She said its intended destination is likely to have been Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

Ms Le Bas said police will not be looking into the matter further and the drugs could have been in the container for up to a year.
