Principals seek advice on 'sleep-over' payments

Secondary principals are concerned that schools will be forced to give back-pay to teachers for every hour they slept at school camps and field trips during the past six years.

The Secondary Principals' Association has sought legal advice to find out if a court ruling on sleep-over payments for hostel staff at boarding schools also applies to other school activities.

A recent Employment Court decision means some boarding schools are facing six years of back-payments at the minimum hourly wage to their staff.

The association says it will be terrible if schools are asked to come up with back-pay for the past six years of school camps and field trips.
