Police say an incident in which armed officers found a man with a BB gun in Porirua on Sunday afternoon could have ended in tragedy if he had not co-operated.
The officers were called to Titahi Bay after people reported seeing a man at the beach with a handgun and then firing pellets inside a local pub.
The area around the pub was cordoned off and patrons were evacuated.
Police say the suspect came out of his own accord and was taken into custody without incident.
They say had he not co-operated and pointed the gun at officers, the outcome may have been very different and potentially tragic.
