North Harbour Stadium changes hands

A council agency is taking over North Harbour Stadium, one of Auckland's biggest sporting venues.

The $60 million stadium will become the third to be owned and managed by Regional Facilities Auckland which is co-ordinating the running of the city's major venues.

North Harbour was built by an independent trust 17 years ago and hosted four Rugby World cup matches. It can hold 25,000 people, nearly half of them in its main grandstand.

The agency's stadium director Doug Cole said along with Mt Smart and Western Springs stadiums, Regional Facilities Auckland can better match events to the right-sized venue and be more efficient by having maintenance contracts over more venues.
