More progress wanted on bowel cancer screening

Eight cancer groups say progress towards national screening for bowel cancer is too slow.

The groups, known collectively as Cango, say bowel cancer is a major health problem and deserves higher priority.

Cango says cancer is New Zealand's number one killer, and the burden will become even greater as the population ages.

It has released a manifesto demanding action in seven main areas by whichever party forms a government after the September election.

Cango says it supports the present Government's commitment to a national bowel-cancer screening programme, but is concerned the rollout is too slow.

It says the next Government must ensure a pilot programme under way in Waitemata is completed to deadline next year, and that the workforce needed for full national screening after that is ready.
