The owners of four dogs that viciously mauled a seven-year-old girl in Murupara near Rotorua have appeared in court charged with owning dogs that caused serious injury.

Gareth Boyt, 35, and Charlotte Boyt, 31, are jointly charged under the Dog Control Act.

Sakurako Uehara was critically injured, receiving more than 100 bites to her face and body when the dogs attacked her on 3 March. She has already had several operations and doctors say she faces many years of reconstructive surgery.

Mr and Mrs Boyt appeared in the Rotorua District Court on Thursday and have been remanded without plea to reappear on 7 May.

The Staffordshire Bull terrier crosses were put down immediately after the attack, which happened at the Boyts' property.
