The Foreign Affairs Ministry has confirmed a New Zealand tourist has been shot and killed in Argentina.

A Ministry spokesperson says the man died in the city of Mendoza, in the west of Argentina, after he was shot during an attempted robbery.

The New Zealand Embassy in Buenos Aires is liaising with the local authorities to obtain details of the incident.

International media have named the man as Nicholas Heywood, 31, who had been living in Australia.

It is believed the thieves were targeting Mr Heywood's bag which may have contained a camera.

The ABC reports he was walking with two friends when they were approached by two men on a motorbike.

The police in Mendoza told the broadcaster he resisted and was shot in the neck and chest before collapsing. Attempts to revive him failed.

Argentinian media is reporting police as saying there are several witnesses to the killing.

Local authorities are reportedly offering a $5400 reward for any information about the attackers, who fled the scene.

Local media reported Mr Heywood had been staying at a local hostel and had arrived from the popular tourist resort of Bariloche as part of a trip around Argentina.

The Argentina Independent said he was travelling with an Australian woman and a French man who were unharmed in the attack.
