The Canterbury Geriatric Medical Research Trust study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medication that may help prevent the onset of early memory loss - one of the first signs of the disease.

A trustee and investigato, Nigel Gilchrist said current medications managed symptoms of memory loss but don't necessarily slow the course of the disease.

Dr Gilchrist said if the trial was successful it would be an exciting breakthrough.

The trust was looking for people to take part in the two-year trial.

Participants must be over 50 and have had signs of worsening memory over the past year.
