Single-car crash in Northland kills one

One person has died in an early-morning car crash in Northland.

The police said the single-car crash happened at about two o'clock on Saturday morning near Kaiwaka.

And, in Napier, the police have named the toddler who died after being hit by a car in a Napier carpark yesterday.

He was Clayton O'Brien, aged 28 months, of Napier.

The police said that it appeared he ran in front of a moving car in the carpark of KFC on Thackeray Street.

A police investigation was continuing on Saturday.

And, a crashed truck blocked state highway two north of Dannevirke on Saturday morning , and the police said the road was closed beyond midday.

The police said the truck was empty, and was pushed over when it was caught by strong winds.

At noon, attempts were still being made to separate the truck from its trailer to allow a crane to lift the truck off the road.

Diversions were put in place at Takapau.

The Transport Agency warned drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorbikes to travel with caution as strong winds were making travel hazardous.
