Govt making builders more accountable

9:54 pm on 10 July 2014

Builders carrying out work worth more than $30,000 will have to disclose their skills, experience and qualifications.

The new requirements come into effect on 1 January next year, after being approved by the Cabinet on Monday.

Building and Construction Minister Nick Smith said on Thursday that improvements need to be made in how building work is contracted to ensure better quality, improved affordability and fewer disputes.

Dr Smith said the disclosure requirements would reinforce the good practice of many building repairers, while constraining 'cowboys' interested in making a quick buck.
