Harassment tip list off target

Massey University Wellington has come under fire after it issued a list of tips to avoid being sexually assaulted.

Tips include advice to carry a whistle, keep to well-lit areas and wear comfortable shoes.

Massey University Wellington spokesperson James Gardiner said the list was part of an email the university put out in response to an alleged sexual assault Wellington police were investigating.

The attack was on a woman near the war memorial at the campus in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Wellington Rape Crisis agency manager Elenor Butterworth said Massey is doing good work to help staff and students recognise and fight against sexual assault but the list shifts the focus of sexual violent behaviour onto targets as opposed to offenders.
