Forklift injury leads to hefty fine

Erica Machado was organising boxes in the packhouse when she suffered a fractured ankle and a large laceration to one of her legs in the May 2013 accident.

The 33-year-old's employer, LRK Trays Limited, and two associated companies have been convicted under the Health and Safety in Employment Act for failing to take all practicable steps to ensure she was not harmed at work.

WorkSafe New Zealand says the three companies should have done more to ensure forklifts were kept well away from the area Ms Machado was working in.

The companies were each fined about $39,000 in the Tauranga District Court yesterday and ordered to share payment of an additional $20,000 in reparation.
