A bodybuilder and head of a large-scale steroid ring, who imported and supplied illegal performance-enhancing drugs, has been jailed.

Phillip Musson was sentenced to four years and five months in prison when he appeared at the Auckland District Court today for importing, possessing and supplying prescription medicines and anabolic steroids.

The 44-year-old earlier pleaded guilty to 188 breaches of the Medicines Act, spanning a period from November 2011 to February last year.

Musson also admitted forging a driver's licence and using it to pick up packages imported from Hong Kong and China containing the medicines.

Since 2012, three other men also involved in the operation have been sentenced to home detention on similar charges.
