The body responsible for attracting foreign students to New Zealand says that student numbers rose 8 percent in the first four months of the year.

Education New Zealand said that the increase would help add $100 million to the value of the education sector.

Visa and enrolment figure showed there were more than 67,000 foreign students in New Zealand - 5000 more than last year.

Education New Zealand said most of the increase was from an increase in students from China.

It said the rise would help lift annual spending by international students by $100 million, to $2.7 billion
