AOS operation in Waikato resolved

5:35 pm on 3 September 2014

Police say that a major armed police operation in the Waikato has been now been resolved.

Armed police swarmed over a rural Waikato property this afternoon after shots were heard.

The Waikato Armed Offenders Squad, a team of negotiators and a helicopter were sent to a Neavesville Valley property, near Puriri, at about 1.30pm.

Police also closed large parts of State Highway 26 and had urged against travel between Paeroa and Thames.

They said a man pointed a gun at a neighbour who'd gone out to investigate the shots.

A local resident, who didn't want to be named, said several police officers came up his driveway towards the valley behind his house.

Monique Fitness who lives south of Kopu near Puriri School said the school called her after a parent told it about the armed police response.

Ms Fitness said the school told her it was locked down, and suggested picking children up early.

The police said they're speaking to a 69-year-old man to establish what, if any, offences have been committed.
