A piece of one of New York's twin towers that has sat as a memorial in Christchurch for the past 12 years is to be moved for safekeeping while earthquake repairs are made to its site.

In May 2002, five steel girders weighing 5.5 tons were salvaged from the site of the World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attack the year before, and gifted to Christchurch by New York City
for use as a public artwork.
One of the girders fell from the 102nd floor of Tower Two, piercing the subway below.
The memorial honouring firefighters around the world was moved this morning from Firefighters Reserve at the corner of Kilmore and Madras streets, to make way for bridge repairs.
The Fire Service has arranged for it to be stored for the next three months.
