The office's annual report for the year to June shows it received 3215 complaints and investigating 300.

As a result of the Canterbury earthquakes, insurers have moved away from full replacement policies towards sum insured policies, including a cap on payouts.

Insurance and Savings Ombudsman Karen Stevens said she was expecting a rise in complaints as a result.

"We've already had complaints because people forget about, for example, demolition costs, professional fees of architects and surveyors or whatever else is included in the particular policy document they've got," she said.

"They don't think about that as being a rebuild cost."

The increase in complaints could also be put down to increased awareness of the role of her office, she said.
