Killer accepts parole unlikely

4:56 pm on 30 September 2014

A man who stabbed an Accident Compensation Corporation worker to death accepts that parole is out of the question anytime soon.

Johnny Manu killed Janet Pike in 1999 and was sent to jail that same year for life with a minimum non-parole period of 12-and-a-half years.

Manu appeared before the Parole Board last week and a full decision has been released today.

The board said he is diagnosed with schizophrenia and has a long history of substance abuse and crimes involving weapons. It has withheld the location of where Manu is being treated.

The board said he is currently stable on his medication and lengthy rehabilitation is essential. It said parole is denied and Manu accepts that.
