The first fatal crash of Labour Weekend happened on Friday, less than half an hour after the start of the holiday road period.

One person died in the crash at Dairy Flat north of Auckland, which also involved a car and a truck.

Police described it as a terrible start to the long weekend.

Last year, one person was killed at Labour Weekend, the lowest since records began, but 111 people were injured, including 20 seriously, according to figures from Ministry of Transport.
