A German tourist is in hospital with injuries from what is thought to be a violent attack near Whangarei.

Police said the man, who is 48, was taken to the Waipu Medical Centre last Thursday evening by a member of the public.

He had suffered serious head and facial injuries and was still recovering, in Whangarei Hospital.

Police believed the tourist had been cycling around Northland and was camping in the Waipu area, before he was assaulted.

His tent, bicycle and belongings were all missing.

Police wanted to hear from anyone who had found any discarded items, and wanted to speak to the person who dropped the injured man off at the medical centre, in Waipu.
