5:57 am on 4 January 2010

A man drowned at an Auckland beach while trying to stop his two children being swept out to sea.

Emergency services called to the scene at Glenbrook beach, west of Pukekohe, at 4.30pm on Saturday tried to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say a member of the public rescued the girl while the father remained with his son.

When the other person returned to assist the father, he was under the water, holding the boy above his head.

The second swimmer took the child while others helped the father to shore. However, CPR was unsuccessful.
