MetService is warning people in Wairarapa and Wellington to expect winds that could cause damage.
A front is moving across the country causing torrential rain on the West Coast of the South Island and severe winds in the North.
Police urge people returning from holidays to drive with caution.
MetService says gale force winds, with gusts of up to 130km per hour in exposed places, will sweep through Wellington and southern Wairarapa on Sunday night.
However, the agency says they should start to calm before dawn.
