Fugitive rapist found in Lower Hutt house

10:19 pm on 9 January 2010

The police have found and arrested the double rapist who has been on the run for more than a fortnight.

Detective Senior Sergeant Virginia Le Bas of the Christchurch police says Maka Renata, who absconded on 23 December from the Christchurch house to which he had been paroled after his release from prison, was located at a home in Lower Hutt.

She says he came into police custody with little fuss, looking slightly unkempt after being on the run for more than two weeks.

In the previous hour, the police had tracked him to the house using information provided by members of the public.

He is now being held in police custody, and will appear in court in the coming week.

Renata, 24, was jailed for rape when he was 14; a year later he raped his cellmate. The police had considered him dangerous and likely to reoffend.
