Cold front moving up country on Sunday

10:01 pm on 9 January 2010

A cold front moving up the country will bring heavy rains to parts of the South Island and strong winds to the lower North Island on Sunday.

That was the warning on Saturday night from MetService, which said that up to 250 millimetres of rain was expected to fall in the Westland ranges by Sunday morning, with lighter rain expected in other areas of the West Coast and in the Southern Alps.

Later on Sunday, severe northerly gales are expected to hit the Wellington region.

MetService said the winds have the potential to damage trees, houses and powerlines, and to make driving hazardous.
