Togo attack seen as reminder of security for World Cup

Football New Zealand says an attack on the Togo football team bus in Angola, is a reminder of the importance of security as the organisation prepares for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The team's assistant coach, press officer and a driver were killed when gunmen opened fire on the bus, which was travelling to the Africa Cup of Nations competition.

There is confusion over whether the Togo team has withdrawn from the tournament.

The Togo government said the team has withdrawn from the tournament, but the BBC reports that two players have now been quoted as saying they have changed their minds and the team is determined to stay in Angola, and play on.

NZ Football chief executive Michael Gladding says there is always the possibility New Zealand players could be attacked.

But he is confident that security measures already in place will ensure the team is well-defended.

Mr Gladding says the security company used by the All Blacks has been hired by Football New Zealand to protect its players while they are at the World Cup.
