Second man may face charges after manhunt

Police say a second man may be charged in relation to a two-week manhunt for convicted double rapist Maka Renata.

Renata, 24, was arrested in a house in the Lower Hutt suburb of Alicetown on Saturday night, more than a fortnight after he left a house where he was living on parole in Christchurch.

Police say another man was in the house when Renata was arrested.

They will speak to this man soon to find out his level of involvement in Renata's efforts to evade arrest, and then will consider what, if any, charges should be laid.

Police were armed with tasers when they went to arrest Renata in Alicetown on Saturday.

But, apart from hiding from the police in the kitchen, they say he went into police custody with very little fuss.

He will appear in court in Lower Hutt on Monday.

Renata absconded on 23 December from a house in Christchurch where he had been living on parole.

He was sentenced to prison for rape when he was aged 14; a year later he raped his cellmate. Police had considered him dangerous and likely to reoffend.
