Security at police checkpoints to be reviewed

The security of patrol cars at checkpoints is to be reviewed after a police officer was injured while trying to stop a police car being stolen at a drink drive checkpoint on Saturday night.

The officer was dragged 10 metres, suffering cuts to her head and tissue damage to her leg and ankle.

Inspector Al Stewart told Summer Report it's not known yet if the keys were left in the ignition of the vehicle.

He said there is no policy over whether keys can be left in the ignition of patrol cars.

The incident happened on Buchanans Rd near Hornby at 11.30pm after car keys were confiscated from a man who had recorded an excess breath alcohol reading. The unmarked police car was taken shortly afterwards.

An arrest was made at a house in Papanui on Sunday morning.

A man, 22, is due in the Chirstchurch District Court on Monday on charges relating to assault and unlawfully taking a car, as well as driving while intoxicated.
