Leading players out of Heineken Open

Several leading tennis players have been eliminated in the second round of the Heineken Open in New Zealand.

Third seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, of Spain, was forced to concede his match to Swiss qualifier Michael Lammer when he twisted an ankle in the opening set and was unable to continue at the men's tournament in Auckland on Wednesday.

Fourth seed Nicholas Almagro, of Spain, lost in straight sets 6-0 6-3 to the unseeded Frenchman Marc Giquel, while seventh seed Juan Monaco, of Argentina, lost to American John Isner 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Rubin Statham was hoping to become the first New Zealander in 11 years to get past the second round and had several chances to win the first set against eighth seed Albert Montanes, but lost in a tiebreak. Montanes went on to win the match 7-6 6-2.

Top seed Tommy Robredo, of Spain, is through to the quarterfinals but had to survive two tiebreakers in his second round match against unseeded German Simon Greul. Robredo won 7-6 7-6.

Fifth seed and previous Heineken Open winner Philipp Kohlschreiber, of Germany, also progressed to the last eight, beating Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 6-4 6-0.

Play was suspended due to rain in the first set of the late match. Frenchman Arnaud Clement was leading second seed David Ferrer, of Spain, 6-5 when play was interrupted 53 minutes into the game.
