Heavy fines urged for people who flee police

The Police Association wants an "absolute crackdown" on motorists whose behaviour leads to police chases.

The suggestion follows calls from Australian police for a mandatory three-year jail term for such offenders.

On Wednesday, a motorcyclist died in a crash after he was earlier involved in a pursuit in Wellington. The Independent Police Conduct Authority will look into the incident.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says there is a provision for a $10,000 fine for failing to stop for police, but it is never imposed.

Fines generally range from $200 and $300, he says.

Mr O'Connor says such crashes often result in injury to the person fleeing police and to other people.
