Auckland Regional Council is celebrating a decision by the Auckland District Health Board to preserve a 100 year old building at Greenlane hospital.
Building 5 was facing demolition by the board, which wanted to use the site for a carpark.
Opened in 1907, the building was originally the old male infirmary.
After a two-year battle to save the building, the ARC says the board has accepted its heritage status and has withdrawn a demolition consent, along with all remaining appeals against its status.
ARC councillor Sandra Coney says support for preserving Building 5 came not only from the council, but from the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and individuals keen to keep an early example of Auckland's healthcare.
She says adaptation and re-use of the building would be no more costly than a complete rebuild.
