Police investigate fatal shooting

5:18 pm on 7 January 2015

Police in Manawatu investigating last weekend's homicide in Woodville have issued an appeal for sightings of a vehicle that could help them solve the case.

They said they expected to remain at the site all today and much of tomorrow and still had plenty of work to do to identify whoever was responsible for the violent death.

Twenty detectives were working on the case and many will be back at the address in Ormond Street, Woodville where the killing took place, searching for clues.

Police said 49-year-old James Whatuira, whose body was found on Sunday, was killed by a single shot from a gun.

They said the Pahiatua man did not live at the address but were giving little else away.

Police also said they were interested in a 2005 model silver Ford Falcon XR6 Saloon, with the registration number CRL12.

They said they found the vehicle at the property where the incident happened but were not prepared to discuss who it belonged to.

They said they believed Mr Whatuira travelled to the property in the vehicle sometime on Sunday, and piecing together its movements was vital to the case.
