A British shooter has claimed New Zealand's oldest sporting trophy, the Ballinger Belt, at the National Rifle Championships.

On his first visit to the Seddon Range in Trentham, Jon Cload of Wiltshire held off Ross Geange of Otorohanga.

He finished with 560.51 points. Geange had 558.39.

It's the fifth time in the last eight years that a foreign shooter has won the belt.
