Japan to open embassy in Solomons

6:55 pm on 12 January 2015

Japan is to upgrade its diplomatic presence in Solomon Islands.

The post is among six new embassies and two new consulates to be opened abroad under Japan's 2015 budget.

It is the highest number of overseas facilities ever approved in Japan at one time.

At present Japan is represented by a branch office of its Papua New Guinea embassy.

Kyodo news reports Tokyo is trying to enhance its diplomatic influence and better communicate its views overseas this year as the world marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War.

The Solomon Islands was the scene of the Pacific war's lengthiest naval campaign between the allies and Japan.
