Microsoft about to release security patch

4:14 pm on 21 January 2010

Microsoft will release an update for its internet browser on Friday after a loophole allowed severe cyber attacks on Google and other firms.

The attacks was so extreme that the Australian, German and French governments issued warnings about internet security.

Microsoft says it has been working around the clock to fix the problem with Internet Explorer, which made it possible for China-based cyber spies to mount the attacks.

Microsoft's national technology officer, Brett Roberts, told Summer Report the update will be released at 7am on Friday, NZ time.

Google said earlier this month that more than 20 other firms were targeted, though only one other company, Adobe, has acknowledged it was attacked.

The attackers lured employees of a company to click on a link and visit a specially crafted website using Internet Explorer. Malicious software was then downloaded.
