Halt urged to adoptions from Haiti

Save the Children New Zealand says all adoptions of children from Haiti should be stopped until a proper screening process is in place.

The agency is worried that children may be taken from their families for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

It says it has received many calls since the magnitude 7.0 earthquake, from people who want to help by evacuating Haitian children to foster and adoptive homes.

But a spokesperson says all adoptions for children affected by the quake should be stopped until a proper screening process is in place.

UNICEF is also worried about the number of Haitian children leaving the country since the earthquake on 12 January. It says there's evidence children are being stolen.
