No action by NZ police over Antarctic collision

4:23 pm on 25 January 2010

New Zealand police are not investigating a complaint from an anti-whaling protest group over a collision of two vessels in Antarctic waters on 6 January.

A complaint was received from Sea Shepherd on 12 January after the high speed craft Ady Gil collided with a Japanese vessel, the Shonan Maru No 2.

The collision led to the sinking of the Ady Gil while under tow on 8 January.

A separate complaint was also made to Maritime New Zealand.

Police consider that it is more appropriate for Maritime New Zealand to undertake such an investigation and they will take no further action.
