A German tourist was left with minor injuries after being attacked and robbed in Nelson early this morning.

The 29-year-old man was approached by a man on Rutherford Street, then attacked from behind by another man as he walked along the street about 3am.

A police spokesperson said the man was kicked and punched before the attackers took his belongings and ran off in the direction of Montgomery carpark.

Members of the public came to the man's aid, and he was treated at hospital for minor injuries.

The attackers took the man's Nike sports bag, which was black with red ends and contained his passport, wallet and clothes. His wallet had 100 and 50 euro notes in it.

One of the attackers was described as short and wearing dark shorts, a white and black top and a cap.

The other, who was taller, was also wearing dark shorts, and a dark shirt.

Nelson police wanted to hear from anyone with information about the incident.
