A group lobbying to prevent David Bain from receiving government compensation for the time he spent in prison says has collected 1300 signatures to date.
Mr Bain served 13 years following the killings of his parents and three siblings at the family home on 20 June 1994.
He was acquitted by a jury at the High Court in Christchurch last year where his lawyers claimed that his father, Robin Bain, shot the family before turning the gun on himself.
The group Justice For Robin Bain says the jury in the retrial was influenced by the long-running promotion of Mr Bain's innocence by supporter Joe Karam.
The group started the petition in September last year. Spokesperson Kent Parker says Mr Karam has threatened the group with legal action in the past.
Mr Karam declined to comment on Wednesday on whether he will sue.
