The news has sparked an outcry on social media amid concerns the original will be ruined by the American producers.

The film was a critical success, and popular with niche audiences overseas but its writer, Gerard Johnstone said local audiences were tiny.

He said he was happy for the Americans to remake the film as they wish.

The film's executive producer, Ant Timson said many top films were also remakes.

He said the deal which was facilitated by Sir Peter Jackson is a win-win for everyone.
