Christchurch City Council staff could not have prevented the death of a social housing tenant in 2013, an independent review has found.
Valmai McFie, 67, died after she was attacked by her neighbour, Colin Hoani, at the MacGibbon Place social housing complex in Spreydon, in July 2013.
Hoani was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 10 years.
A review, released today, found that the tenancy advisor at the time of the incident took all practical steps to defuse the tenant conflict.
Council chief executive Karleen Edwards said since 2013, the council had made a number of changes to the way it managed social housing tenancies, particularly around how risks to tenants and staff were identified.
