About 40,000 people packed into Westpac stadium in Wellington on Thursday to see Australian rockers AC/DC.

It's been 12 years since AC/DC played in New Zealand and 19 years since their last concert in Wellington.

The concert tour's promoter Christo Van Egmond says nearly 90,000 tickets were sold for the New Zealand leg of the tour the first day they went on sale.

The band plays another concert in the capital on Saturday and one in Auckland next Thursday as part of their Black Ice tour.
