Cannabis club founder loses legal bid

The founder of New Zealand's first cannabis club, who has been arguing that cannabis laws are a breach of his rights, has had a stay of proceedings claim rejected by an Auckland District Court judge.

Dakta Green, formerly Ken Morgan, faces charges relating to possession of cannabis and possession for supply.

Mr Green claims cannabis laws discriminate against users of the drug and that the severity of the associated penalties breach the Bill of Rights Act.

In a decision delivered on Friday, Judge Anne Keirnan told Mr Green that while the evidence he supplied may be powerful ammunition for persuading Parliament to reform laws relating to cannabis and its use, the court system is not the forum for it.

Dakta Green is due to stand trial next week.
