A 48-year-old kayaker has been found dead at Tauranga Bay near Westport.
Emergency services were called about 5pm yesterday after the man who had been fishing from a kayak was found face down in the water, about 30 metres from the shore.
Police said attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.
They were investigating the incident.
