Two gang members are facing serious assault charges after detectives were attacked while investigating a crime in Gisborne.

Police say the plainclothes officers were knocked unconscious outside a house in the suburb of Kaiti while investigating a crime about 11am on Friday.

No weapons were involved in the attack.

Police say the detectives were taken to Gisborne Hospital with cuts, bruising and scratches to the head and neck.

One officer has been discharged, while the other is being kept in for observation.

Acting Gisborne area commander Inspector Steve Darroch says the motive for the attacks is unclear at this stage.

Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon believes those responsible should be locked up.
