Call to delay Maori agency

4:29 pm on 30 July 2008

The Federation of Maori Authorities has urged the Government to shelve and review its plans to create a separate Maori economic development agency.

The Maori Affairs Select Committee is considering a bill to revamp the the Maori Trust Office, which administers Maori land and assets owned by multiple parties.

Federation chief executive Paul Morgan says it supports the intention of the new agency, but says the Maori business community has not been consulted and there are questions about funding the agency from the Maori Trust Office.

Mr Morgan says it is important the new agency is established credibly and in the right.
