The Christchurch City Council has released its business case for the $156 million it wants to spend on cycleways in the city.

Cycle lanes were among recommendations to boost cycling and the safety of cyclists.

The cost of the 13 planned cycleways skyrocketed following a decision to separate cyclists from motorists and prompted criticism of the council, which is considering rates rises of 28 percent over the next three years.

Today, the council announced that every dollar spent on the network would return up to eight dollars in benefits over the next 40 years, including health benefits and less congested roads.

It said the costs would be lower thanks to central government funding for cycleways around the country.
