Detonator explodes in soldier's hand

An army soldier is recovering from surgery following an accident in which a detonator exploded in his hand.

The incident involving a 22-year-old lieutenant from Linton Military Camp near Palmerston North occurred at Waiouru army camp on Saturday.

Army spokesperson Paul Stein says bits of plastic were removed from the soldier's hand.

He says it is not clear what caused the explosion and an investigation will be held into the matter.

In November last year, Flight Sergeant Andrew Forster, 46, was marking an artillery shell for future disposal when it exploded just metres from him, killing him instantly.
